Learning takes root as students venture away from the classroom and into the countryside

Working with Jamie’s Farm, seven students ventured beyond the classroom in a four-day residential in Bath that immersed them in farm life and the rhythms of the natural world. The residential centred on teamwork, communication and resilience. Students followed structured early-morning routines, taking responsibility for feeding, cleaning and caring for animals. Daily country walks and outdoor activities were built into the programme, while shared mealtimes became an intentional space for connection, reflection and positive dialogue. These experiences created a calm, purposeful environment where students could feel valued, capable and part of a group. By venturing beyond the classroom and into a farm setting, students were able to develop confidence and self-belief in ways that are often harder to achieve through academic work alone.

As with any intensive programme, there were challenges. For some students, early starts, unfamiliar routines and shared living required significant adjustment. Working collaboratively, managing emotions and communicating effectively did not always come easily.

These challenges were an essential part of the learning. With consistent support and clear expectations, students were encouraged to work through difficulties rather than avoiding them, building resilience, independence and trust along the way.

The impact has been both immediate and lasting. During the residential, students demonstrated growing confidence, improved teamwork and stronger communication skills. Shared mealtimes and group activities helped build positive relationships and a stronger sense of cohesion within the cohort.

Overall, the residential highlighted the powerful impact of experiential learning in supporting students who may struggle to engage in traditional settings. By combining structure, responsibility and meaningful relationships, the experience at Jamie’s Farm enabled students to develop skills and confidence that extend well beyond the four days in Bath. The learning, resilience and connections formed continue to influence how these students approach school life, reinforcing the value of providing alternative, nurturing opportunities that help every young person feel capable, included and hopeful about their future.
