OA-Havering students reach new heights

Olive Academies Foundation believes in helping students venture beyond the classroom: exploring new environments, acquiring fresh skills and expanding horizons.

OA-Havering ventured beyond Essex, on an unforgettable six-day ski adventure in the Italian Alps - an experience believed to be the first of its kind for an alternative provision academy.

A small group of pupils, selected for their outstanding behaviour, spent five days on the slopes with expert instructors, learning new skills and discovering independence in a completely new environment. For many, it was their first time travelling abroad or flying, making the experience even more memorable.

The trip was fully funded by the Olive Academies Foundation, removing financial barriers and ensuring every eligible student could take part. Preparations included dry-slope lessons funded by the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation, where students built confidence and determination ahead of their alpine adventure.

Opportunities like this are relatively common in mainstream schools but rarely seen in alternative provision. The ski trip demonstrates that every young person, regardless of their background or previous challenges, deserves access to enriching experiences that promote confidence, teamwork and resilience.

We deliberately design opportunities to stretch comfort zones, build character, and foster the belief that students can succeed beyond the familiar.

Organising a residential trip abroad for an alternative provision setting came with practical and logistical challenges. From coordinating travel and accommodation to managing equipment, risk assessments and student preparation, every element required careful planning. Ensuring the trip was inclusive and fully funded was also essential, allowing all eligible students to take part and benefit equally from the experience.

The impact of the trip was profound. Students returned with a sense of pride, independence, and self-belief that has carried over into their learning. They represented the academy exceptionally throughout, acting as role models for their peers.

This first-of-its-kind ski trip has set a new benchmark for what’s possible in alternative provision — proving that with the right support, every young person can venture beyond and reach new heights.
