New Research Highlights the Importance of Support for Young People in Education
A new report from the Youth Endowment Fund has found that children who are suspended or excluded from school are nearly two and a half times more likely to become involved in violence, even when factors such as behavioural difficulties are taken into account. The report also shows that excluded young people are four and a half times more likely to offend than their peers.
At Olive Academies, we were pleased to contribute to raising awareness of this important report on Channel 4 News. We took part to represent how high-quality alternative provision can be part of the solution to the issues the study uncovered. Our belief is that every child and young person has the ability and the right to learn and achieve, and it is essential that those who may not flourish in mainstream education are not disproportionately exposed to negative outcomes and influences later in life.
The research highlights the vital role a strong support system can play in securing the best outcomes for young people. Across our trust, we see every day how targeted support, tailored learning, and a focus on personal development and therapeutic support can help young people successfully re-engage with learning and succeed in education, work and life.
These findings should give us all renewed motivation to support the needs of every child, because they deserve our best efforts – and so do our communities.
Many thanks to the pupils and staff who volunteered their time and effort to support this.
